Position Overview

As a Provincial Inspector Trainee in the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, you will undergo a structured training period to support transportation and regulatory inspection tasks. This position is ideal for motivated individuals who want to begin a career in transportation oversight, compliance, and enforcement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior inspectors in carrying out roadworthy / vehicle inspections, ensuring compliance with safety and technical standards.
  • Conduct site visits to check adherence to transport regulations, including overload, licensing, and permits.
  • Collect, record, and report data and findings accurately; prepare inspection reports under guidance.
  • Monitor and enforce safety, environmental, and traffic regulations.
  • Support investigations of incidents and complaints related to transport operations.
  • Liaise with internal teams and external agencies (law enforcement, municipalities) where needed.
  • Maintain a clean record of inspections, logs, and documentation.

Requirements

  • Matric (Grade 12) with good passes in Mathematics and Physical Science (or equivalent).
  • Valid driver’s license (Code B or higher).
  • Ability to travel throughout the province (own transport / willingness to travel).
  • Good attention to detail, strong observation skills.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office: Word, Excel) and ability to prepare reports.
  • Physical fitness to conduct inspections in field environments (outside, roadside, mechanical workshops).
  • Good communication skills in English, and where applicable, isiZulu or another local language.

Training & Development

  • On-the-job training with guided mentorship by experienced inspectors.
  • Workshops, in-house training sessions on transport law and technical standards.
  • Regular assessments of performance, with the possibility of promotion to full Inspector roles upon successful completion.

Location & Working Conditions

  • Based in one of the provincial offices of the KZN Department of Transport.
  • Fieldwork includes exposure to outdoor weather conditions, workshop environments, and roadside inspections.
  • Standard working hours plus some flexibility for field inspections; possible overtime.
