Bishops College is Hiring a Housemother in Cape Town

The above position will become available from 1 January 2027

The role of the Housemother is twofold in that she should:
Assist the House Director with pastoral care, specifically offering maternal care for the boys as well
as to be responsible for the supervision of the general housekeeping of the boarding house.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for transporting and coordinating lifts to and from the airport as well as other
    ad hoc lifting for the boys.
  • Liaise with the Nursing Sisters and House Director regarding medical appointments.
  • Oversee maintenance in the house, which requires proactive involvement, planning with
    the House Director/Maintenance Team and follow-through.
  • Play an active role on the house parent committee.
  • Assist with organizing set up and attending all house functions.
  • Liaise with the Outsourced Catering Manager daily regarding dietary requirements of
    boarders.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of dormitory staff members.
  • Responsible for the management of sick boarders.
  • Oversee the laundry process and manage laundry accounts.
  • Promote high standards of hygiene and personal wellbeing for boarders.
  • Distribution of medication.
  • Attend Food Committee Meetings regularly.
  • Contactable at all times except when officially off duty (two weekends a month and
    holidays)
    Qualities and Skills:
  • A dedicated individual who enjoys interaction with boys, staff and parents.
  • Experience as a mother, preferably of teenage boys.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be a team player, with good interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literate.
  • Have First Aid qualification (or be prepared to obtain one).
  • Have a PDP (or be prepared to obtain one).
  • Initiative and attention to detail.
  • High energy level/physically fit.
  • Be compassionate, approachable and caring, always having boys’ best interests at heart.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Willing to contribute and become involved in the vibrant school life.
    This is a busy job for an active individual who enjoys interacting with young people, can manage
    staff and is well organized
