How to write dates on your CV
There is an art to writing a CV, and a quick Google search will show you a number of different CV templates and CV samples. Apart from your qualifications and actual job experience, which is written under the duties section, the dates are important
Dates of employment are written in chronological order and they tell your hiring manager the timeline of your career history. From time to time, I come across CVs that do not include the months on the dates of employment. These CVs typically just have years listed and no months. My opinion only, but here is why I would reconsider this:
- This may raise flags with some hiring managers. They may think that the candidate is trying to conceal some short stays.
- Using only years can make any career gaps appear longer than they actually are.
- It makes your work experience harder to understand.
The employment dates may take the focus away from your capabilities, and the interview just becomes about your employment history. It is also best practice to put your latest job first on the CV such that if the hiring manager is skimming through your CV, they can see the latest role first.
