About the Company 

Webafrica was founded in 1997 in Cape Town, South Africa. The company is service-based, providing many South Africans with fast and reliable Fibre internet and Fixed LTE. 

Webafrica had offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg but, from May 2022, has become a ‘work-from-home business model’. They were one of the first Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in South Africa to go fully remote.

The company is run by a Board and group of Shareholders who have previously worked in renowned local and international companies such as Storm Telecom, Teraco, Smartcom, and Host Europe Group.

Types of Jobs They Hire 

Webafrica specialises in hiring various roles for their different departments. Some of the departments include sales, operations, internet access, DevOps and cancellations and retentions. 

Current roles are as follows (but not limited to):

  • Cancellations and Retentions Agent

  • Outbound Sales Representative
  • Technical Support Agent

Locations they hire from 

Webafrica seems to hire South Africans exclusively. The website does not specify; however, after a quick LinkedIn search, I found that a vast majority of individuals who work at Webafrica are South African. Also, the location for all the job roles is South Africa. That may be a good indication that they are proudly South African. 

Qualifications & Experience Required

These are specific to the job you apply for. Webafrica is an ISP, so you should expect that many of the roles will be technical. Since the company is a service provider, they will require staff to sell the service, which is commonly referred to as sales. 

For a role in sales, internet access or cancellations and retentions, you will need to have a matric certificate, customer service/ call centre experience and an understanding of ISP networks. (This is what I got after comparing the similarities of these roles, but each role will have precise additional requirements). 

A role in DevOps will require a degree or diploma in Computer Science, more than five years of experience working as an RPA developer, and three or more years working as a software experience. There is a lot of programming and software familiarity and expertise that is vital for a role of this calibre. 

Tools & Materials that are required 

Webafrica does not mention the need for specific tools or materials in any of the roles. In fact, the careers page explicitly says that Webafrica employees will receive complimentary internet access at their homes, along with any necessary hardware and software. What a lovely perk! Below, I will list more pros of being employed by Webafrica. 

Pros of working for Webafrica

As you can see above, Webafrica has some significant selling points, such as 100% remote working and all relevant hardware, plus free internet access. Let’s go through more.

Free Healthcare:

Health insurance in South Africa is expensive. Webafrica provides cost-to-company medical aid through Discovery Health. The company values its employees’ health, and it is noted that Discovery Vitality is also included – if you’re familiar with Vitality, then you know this is absolutely wonderful!

Wellbeing check-ins:

While working from home can be beneficial in many ways, there are some downsides, such as being isolated with no co-worker banter or socialising during the week. For some personalities, this can lead to a downward spiral. Webafrica provides free mental health counselling sessions, education in mental wellbeing and regular check-ins to see how you are coping. 

Further your studies: 

Webafrica is passionate about advancing your career with the company. If you decide to enrol for a short course or degree, Webafrica pays for the expense. In addition to that, Webafrica provides paid study leave. 

Work, play and reward:

Cons of Working for Webafrica

Webafrica boasts a great deal of pros, but after doing a deep dive into some Glassdoor and Indeed reviews left by current and past employees of the company, we can see that there are a few things that could be improved. Please be advised that this is based on individual experiences, and no further details have been provided. 

Inadequate communication between management:

When working remotely, this is understandable, as communication will always be done over the phone or email. There could be delays, miscommunication and even instances where communication gets lost in inboxes. Nevertheless, it must be uncomfortable for subordinates to not be in the loop. 

Not enough women on tech teams:

A current employee has stated that there is one woman in a team of 15 people. This shows that there needs to be more diversity at Webafrica. It might even be quite daunting for some ladies to be working with a team made up of only males.
