Location: Various guarded beaches in Mbhashe Local Municipality
Contract Period: Peak holiday seasons (e.g. December–January, Easter, and other high-traffic periods)
Daily Rate: Lifeguard: R 400/day • Squad Leader: R 600/day (or as per your organisation’s scale)

Mbhashe Local Municipality is committed to community safety and water-rescue excellence. During peak coastal periods, we deploy seasonal lifeguards to safeguard beachgoers, minimize incidents, and promote water safety. We seek dedicated, capable individuals to join our beach safety team.

Where you’ll work

Successful applicants may be placed at any of the municipality’s guarded beaches between Willowvale and Elliotdale. You should be ready to serve at any site listed below (placement is done by the municipality):

  • Qhora Beach — Ward 22, Gatyana
  • Mpame Beach — Ward 19, Xhora
  • Lubanzi Beach — Ward 19, Xhora
  • Mbotlompo Beach — Ward 19, Xhora
  • Bulungula Beach — Ward 19, Xhora
  • Nkanya Beach — Ward 32, Xhora
  • Cwebe Beach — Ward 20, Xhora
  • Haven Beach — Ward 20, Xhora
  • Dwesa Beach — Ward 29, Gatyana
  • Tenza Beach — Ward 22, Gatyana

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise swimmers and enforce designated safe swimming zones
  • Monitor changing sea conditions, identify hazards (rip currents, rocks, waves)
  • Warn beachgoers of dangerous conditions; intervene when necessary
  • Control crowd behaviour in a calm but firm manner
  • Provide First Aid / CPR / emergency rescue until more advanced help arrives
  • Maintain, inspect, and guard rescue and lifesaving equipment
  • Conduct beach patrols, maintain logs of incidents, and report to supervisor or Squad Leader
  • Assist in coordinating rescue operations and team activities (for Squad Leaders)
  • Participate in briefings, safety drills, and training sessions

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 18 years or older
  • Basic literacy (ability to read/write for logs, signage, reporting)
  • Strong physical fitness; ability to pass periodic fitness tests
  • Proof of residence (municipal bill, affidavit, ward councillor letter, etc.)
  • Preference will be given to candidates residing near the coastline
  • Advantageous: Lifeguard certification (e.g. from Lifesaving South Africa or equivalent), First Aid / CPR certification
  • Previous experience in beach lifeguarding or water rescue is a plus
  • Ability to work under pressure, act decisively, and manage emergencies

Terms, Remuneration & Schedule

  • Temporary / seasonal employment
  • Deployment periods correspond with holiday peaks
  • Pay rates: Lifeguard: R 400/day | Squad Leader: R 600/day
  • Candidates will be assigned to beaches from a pre-approved list; placement may vary
  • Number of guarded days per beach will be confirmed before deployment
